When Tomorrow is Still Around the Corner
Well, butter my biscuit and straighten the porch rug over there, friend. You’ve done arrived at this ol’ front porch just in time. Tomorrow is sittin’ out yonder somewhere beyond the ridge, quieter than a lil’ ol’ rabbit hidin’ underneath a blackberry bush, and most of us would sho’-nuff like God to hand us the whole itinerary before suppertime. We plum want dates, directions, guarantees, and maybe a roadside map with every single pothole circled. God usually says, “Trust Me.”
That can make us downright fidgety.
Proverbs 27:1 reminds us, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” We can study trends, make predictions, and organize enough spreadsheets to make an accountant holler for mercy, but nobody on earth knows exactly what tomorrow will carry through the gate.
God sho’-nuff’ does, though.
Jeremiah 29:11, says, “For I know the plans I have for you...plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Here God assures His people that He plum knows the plans He has for ‘em. Notice He don’t hand ‘em the blueprint, though. He gives ‘em somethin’ a whole lot better. He downright gives ‘em Himself.
And here’s another promise worth tuckin’ into your heart, friend. Isaiah 46:10 says God declares “the end from the beginning” and that His purpose will stand. What looks mighty foggy to us ain’t foggy to Him at all. The road that disappears around the mountain is still real plain beneath His feet.
Faith, therefore, ain’t about knowin’ what happens next. Faith is knowin’ the One who is already waitin’ there.
Father, when tomorrow feels uncertain, keep me from borrowing trouble that hasn’t even arrived. Teach me to trust Your wisdom, rest in Your goodness, and follow You one faithful step at a time. Thank You that my unknown future is completely known to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now, stand up and dust off your boots so you can vamoose right on back into your day, friend, and quit tryin’ to peek around every corner like a nosy lil’ ol’ gopher checkin’ the county road. Tomorrow may arrive dressed up like Sunday go-to-meetin’ company or tumble through the door like an ol’ hog comin’ after a mud bath. Either way, God won’t be surprised at all. Keep your hope mighty strong because the future may be unknown to you, but it ain’t never been unknown to the One who’s holdin’ your hand.
With joy,
Gwen
