When the Foundation Ain’t Built on Folks

Well, looky here! You just swing that ol’ screen door wide open, friend, git yourself on up here on this ol’ front porch and come sit where the breeze is real decent and them lil’ ol’ mosquitoes ain’t holdin’ a blood revival. I’m plum glad you stopped by here today. Put your whole faith in people, and you’ll be wobblin’ around like a milk stool with one leg sunk down in the mud. Even good folks can get plum turned around a whole lot quicker than a bobwhite quail that went and flew into the henhouse by mistake.

Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice.” That there is where faith belongs. Not in a preacher. Not in a church board. Not in a denomination. People can love Jesus dearly and still get things wrong.

Churches are plum full of imperfect folks because that’s the only kind of folks God has to work with. Pastors can sho’-nuff’ disappoint us. Leaders surely can stumble. Friends can downright say something that lands sideways. But their failure don’t make Jesus any less faithful.

Psalm 62:6 says, “He only is my rock and my salvation.” Notice that lil’ ol’ word “only.” God never asked us to build our hope on somebody else’s perfection. Jeremiah 17:7 says, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord.” Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Folks change. But Jesus don’t.

That ol’ hymn got it right: “On Christ the solid Rock I stand.” Everything else can shift like an ol’ stinky skunk scootin’ right up under the smokehouse when somebody lights a lantern.

Father, keep my faith anchored in You. When people disappoint me, guard my heart from bitterness. Help me love Your people without expecting them to be my Savior. Keep my feet planted on Christ, my unshakable Rock. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright now, friend, gather up your things and head on into the day before that ol’ barn owl starts actin’ like he owns the porch. Don’t hitch your whole wagon to any human bein’, no matter how shiny the harness looks. A creek bank can crumble and a fence post can lean, but the Rock of Ages ain’t goin’ nowhere. Love people, forgive people, and pray for people. Just make sure the weight of your soul is restin’ on Jesus.

With joy,

Gwen
