Tied Tight to the Truth

Well, tip my hat and warm up the kettle, friend! Now you come steppin’ right on up on this ol’ front porch before that breeze whisks you plum away like a loose napkin at a church picnic. I’m mighty glad you’re here. Park yourself on that wide plank rocker that hums like a cricket choir warmin’ up on a summer night and git yourself plum settled in real good. We’re about to go on a fine journey through God’s Word together, and I reckon it’ll warm your heart better than a kettle of soup simmerin’ on a woodstove.

Jonah 1:17 says, “Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. Then, Jonah 2:1 says, “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly.” Now, friend, trustin’ God when life drops you into a big ol’ mess feels a whole lot like tryin’ to guide a panicked lil’ ol’ quail that plum wandered into the pantry and now it downright refuses to leave. You clap your hands, you shuffle your boots, you wave your arms around like an ol’ raccoon that forgot how to climb out of the trashcan, and that ol’ quail just flutters in circles like it’s sho’-nuff’ auditionin’ for some sort of a barnyard circus. But God never flutters in confusion, not one bit. He sees every trouble, every fear, every moment that plum hits you like a pine knot tumblin’ off a tall pine tree and thumpin’ you square on the shoulder. And He sees it perfectly.

Jonah sure found himself in a real tight spot. He’d run off from God, caused a big ol’ storm, plum got tossed overboard, and then sho’-nuff’ swallowed by a great big ol’ fish that probably smelled like yesterday’s seaweed stew. But deep inside that belly, Jonah finally prayed. Psalm 32:7 reminds us with the words, “You are my hiding place.” And Psalm 34:17 adds another layer of truth when it says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears.” God don’t wait for perfect conditions. He meets us right where we are, even if where we are smells like fish guts and regret.

Prayer ain’t the last resort. It’s plum the lifeline. Jonah didn’t fix his situation. He didn’t negotiate with the fish. He didn’t try to swim home. He prayed. And God heard him. God always hears the heart that turns toward Him even from the strangest places imaginable.

Friend, don’t wait until every idea fails and every plan fizzles. Make prayer your first impulse. Make it your steady breath. Make it the place where your kingdom goes and His kingdom comes. God’s deliverance is already movin’ toward you even if you can’t see it yet.

Father, teach me to pray first, not last. Help me trust You in tight places, strange places, and unexpected places. Remind me that You hear me, You see me, and You deliver me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Well alright then, friend, bless your heart, it’s plum time for you to be makin’ your way off this here porch and into the rest of your doin’s for the day. Walk on ahead with a heart lighter than a lil’ ol’ firefly dancin’ around at dusk and a spirit a whole lot steadier than a wise ol’ owl perched out on a cedar limb. You ain’t walkin’ alone. You’re plum walkin’ with the God that sho’-nuff’ hears you from inside of the belly of any kind of trouble and brings you out into the bright, wide-open world again.

With joy,

Gwen
