Grace for the Rough Trails
Hey there, friend, well I declare, come on up here on this ol’ front porch and rest yourself a minute. That ol’ rocker over yonder may creak like a cranky ol’ barn door that hasn’t been oiled since the ol’ grandaddy rooster learned how to crow, but it’ll hold you just fine. The breeze is shufflin’ through the trees like a bunch of mischievous lil’ ol’ chipmunks that plum got caught stealin’ pecans. Mercy me, it’s a sweet pleasure to have you stoppin’ by here, and I reckon today’s word is fixin’ to settle into your heart like a warm quilt on a cold mountain night.
Psalm 34:19 says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” That verse slips into the soul like sweet tea on a hot day. And when you set it beside Hebrews 11:35-39, you see folks who walked through trials that’d make a raccoon that fell out of a pine tree rethink its life choices. They wandered through deserts and mountains, wore sheepskins and goatskins, and faced hardships that’d make a mule sit down and refuse to move. Yet Scripture says the world wasn’t worthy of them. Their faith wasn’t built on comfort. It was built on confidence that God was present even when life felt like a briar patch.
Paul heard the Lord say in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” That truth settles deep, like a hound that finally found the perfect shady spot. And Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Fear not, for I am with you.” Friend, that there promise is sturdier than a fence post sunk deep in Texas clay. Jesus Himself knew real sorrow, exhaustion, loneliness and pain. He cried out, He prayed hard, He felt abandoned, yet He trusted His Father’s heart. Maybe faith isn’t meant to erase the storm. Maybe faith is meant to downright anchor us while the storm rages around us like a big ol’ wild turkey that got startled by its own reflection.
In addition, Romans 8:37 says, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” That ain’t no promise for perfect days. It’s a promise for the days that feel like you’re trudging uphill behind a stubborn ol’ goat that refuses to cooperate. And Psalm 73:26 says, “My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” That verse reaches down into the deepest places remindin’ us that even when our strength runs out, God’s strength steps in, firm as a mountain ridge that refuses to crumble. These truths don’t erase the valley but shine a light bright enough to help you keep walkin’.
So, today, may the Lord fill your heart with the same peace that carried Jesus, Paul, and all those faithful ones in Hebrews. You ain’t been forgotten. You ain’t been unseen. You’re plum held tighter than a lil’ ol’ calf that got scooped up by an ol’ rancher who knows exactly how to care for it.
Father, You know my name and You know my needs. Thank You for promising that when I seek Your Kingdom first, You will provide all I need. Strengthen my faith, steady my heart and help me trust You in every valley. I entrust my life to You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Ok now, friend, I reckon it’s time for you to head off this porch and git yourself back into whatever the rest of your day’s got cookin’. You gotta be making sure that courage can git to risin’ inside you like an ol’ Banty rooster that decided sunrise needed a little extra enthusiasm. Peace can git to settlin’ over you the way a soft hush rolls across a field when the fireflies start blinkin’. Joy can git to dancin’ through your heart like a frisky lil’ ol’ colt that finally figured out how strong its legs really are. And faith can git to standin’ real steady in you, firm as an ol’ oak that’s weathered more storms than it bothers to count. Now go on, friend, you’ve gotta be carryin’ this truth with you as sure as a real good pocketknife tucked where you can reach it when life needs a little whittlin’.
With joy,
Gwen
